The Connection Era: How Tamagotchi Came Back (2004–2007)

October 04, 2026

Somewhere in the late nineties, the Tamagotchi boom faded. The little egg-shaped keychains that had filled bus stops and bedrooms everywhere went quiet in the West, and for a while it looked like the digital pet had been a passing fad. Then, in 2004, it came back — not as a nostalgia reprint, but as something new.

The Tamagotchi Connection (marketed as Tamagotchi +C in some regions) marked the series' return to North American and European shelves after years of silence. The hardware was familiar — the same egg shape, the same care-and-clean duties, meals and snacks and praise — but the family also grew a Plus line that pushed color and personality further, ending in the Plus Color. Together these two lines told one story: the Tamagotchi was back, and it had grown up.

The big new idea was infrared linking. Point two Tamagotchis at each other and they could exchange gifts, visit, play, and even fall in love and raise a family together. For kids (and plenty of adults) this turned the solitary keychain into something social. The pet you carried was no longer just your private companion; it became part of a little network you could share with friends at recess, on the bus, or across the classroom.

That linking was the real turning point. It took the intimate, one-on-one bond of the original egg and spread it outward. It made the device feel alive in a new way — not just alive for you, but alive between people. And it quietly set the path for everything that followed, up to today's full-color Uni with its connected world.

For fans and nostalgic grown-ups, the Connection and Plus eras hold a special place. This was the moment the Tamagotchi stopped being a relic and started being a lineage. If you grew up on the classic keychain, the Connection felt familiar enough to be coming home, and novel enough to be discovery. It bridged the gap between the noisy, monochrome egg of 1996 and the smooth, colorful device of today.

That bridge is worth remembering. The late-90s boom gave us the myth; the Connection gave us the sequel. It proved the digital pet had more than one act, and that a community could gather around something small enough to fit in a pocket. When we look back at the era's legacy, the infrared link was more than a feature — it was the idea that our pets could connect, and so could we.
